The Beautiful Mission Valley in Lake County, Montana
Welcome to the Mission Valley, of 1,244,000 acres, and situated within the bounds of the Flathead Indian Reservation. Home to the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes, of approximately 6,800 enrolled members with about 3,500 who live on the reservation. The Mission Valley, graced by the magnificent Mission Mountains, with peaks reaching 10,000 feet, is located north of Missoula and south of Flathead Lake, the largest fresh water lake west of the Mississippi River. It is home to the 19,000 acre National Bison Range on which 300 to 500 bison roam. Along with the buffalo, the Range is also home to herds of whitetail, mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, pronghorns and Rocky Mountain Goats. Ninepipes and Pablo Wildlife Refuges cover some 4,500 acres of wetlands, and provide prime water fowl habitat for Canadian geese, snow geese, mallards, redheads, pintails, cormorants, blue herons and even bald eagles have been seen on occassion. Saint Ignatius, where our office is located, is home to the historic St. Ignatius Mission, built in the late 1800's by Indians and missionaries and is decorated with 58 handpainted frescos and murals.
St. Ignatius, Lake County's oldest town, was founded in 1854 by Jesuit Missionaries, which spawned growth for the valley, with the first school, hospital, saw mill and flour mill in the state. Some of the valley's best hiking & fishing are minutes from town: St. Mary's Lake, Mission Falls & McDonald Lake. Arlee, on the south end of the valley, is host to the annual Indian POW WOW held during the 4th of July, featuring Native American Dancers sharing their rich cultural heritage. Ronan, Pablo & Polson offer golfing. Rafting and kayaking on the Flathead River is a popular sport, as is fishing the hundreds of miles of rivers & streams and Flathead Lake. Winter snow skiing within 100 miles, in Missoula, Lakeside and Whitefish attracts many out of state skiiers.
The Mission Valley offers a unique way of life due primarily to the prominence of agriculture being a major economic base for the valley. Hay and potato farms and cattle ranches dominate the development. Average growing season is 130 to 150 days. Average rainfall is 14.5 inches.
